Wills uses paint and mixed media to re-assemble images as abstractions which reflect aspects of the world that surrounds us. Wills usually works with oil on canvas, constructed upon abstractions of shape & line with bold colour sequences. The artist communicates visually by interpreting his travels in Andalusia and North Africa and of world music. The warmth and vibrancy of these cultures is then found within this language of abstraction, colour and movement as a celebration and remembrance of these events.
These artworks help the viewer understand this personal visual journey as a shared experience, which includes nuanced references of historical abstract painting and pattern design. Taking careful consideration within the creative process, Wills reflects upon aspects of colour balance and graphical-form as a means to make an impact, including the stimulating process of making.
When exploring these themes and concepts he often frees himself from limitations and engages with different possibilities within one work, or a series of works. These paintings offer a view into a world of inter-connected shapes, utilizing the straight angular line and the curved biomorphic line, aiming to complete a unity of form taken from the initial inspiration.
